Our Physicians

Our physicians are board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. To obtain this certification, each doctor must complete college, medical school and at least 5 years of specialty training. The physicians are then required to pass the American Board of Otolaryngology examination to become certified.

Kirby J. Lautman, M.D.

Dr. Lautman was born and raised in the Seattle area. He attended the University of Washington graduating with honors.

He earned a B.A. in Zoology in 1978 and his M.D. in 1982. Internship and Residency training were completed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in 1987. He is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery and, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.

Recreational interests include golf, tennis and skiing. Dr. Lautman has also been honored to participate with "Corner of Love" medical missions to Nicaragua. The support provided by so many in helping with these trips is greatly appreciated.
 

Mark D. Hegewald, M.D.J

Mark D. Hegewald, M.D. was born in Corvallis, Oregon and grew up in Stevenson, Washington, a small town in the Columbia River Gorge. He attended Carroll College in Helena, Montana, graduating with honors and receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree.

He received his medical degree from The University of Washington School of Medicine in 1983. He then pursued his otolaryngology/head & neck surgery residency postgraduate training at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Dr. Hegewald practiced in Olympia, Washington for two years before joining doctors Kozie and Lautman in 1990, with offices in Auburn and Federal Way.

Dr. Hegewald has been married to his wonderful wife Marci for over 30 years. He has three children; Scott, Angie, and Kenny. He also has four grandchildren.

Dr. Hegewald is an avid snow skier and enjoys playing basketball, reading, and spending time with his family. More recently he has taken up slalom water skiing, and competes at the national level.

Dr. Hegewald is a Fellow of The American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, and is Board Certified by The American Board of Otolaryngology.


Mark B. Emery, M.D.

Dr. Emery graduated with a B.Sc. degree from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. in 1989 and received his medical degree from Queen’s University; Kingston, Ontario in 1993.He completed his Internship at the Royal Columbian Hospital in 1994. He then completed his residency in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia and then completed a fellowship in Otology, Minneapolis, Minnesota 1998-1999.

Dr Emery is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology.

Dr Emery treats a wide range of Ear, Nose and Throat conditions, with a special interest in ear and sinus problems, as well as childhood ENT conditions.

Dr Emery and his wife Sheri enjoy a wide range of activates in the Pacific Northwest, including skiing, ice hockey and cooking.


Ryan E. Stern, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Stern is very pleased to have joined Surgical Associates Northwest in 2007. Dr. Stern graduated from The Johns Hopkins University as one of the top students in his class. He then earned his medical degree with honors from the New York University School of Medicine after completing a fellowship at the University of California - San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Stern completed his Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgical residency at the Univeristy of Washington. He also earned his Master of Public Health degree at the UW School of Public Health.

Dr. Stern now serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Washington, within the department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Stern is looking forward to being a part of the community for many years to come. He has long worked with the pediatric population in and out of the hospital and is comfortable with all aspects of pediatric ENT after training at Seattle's Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center. He continues serve on the clinical faculty at the University of Washington and teaches otolaryngology residents how to complete complex surgical cases ranging from revision endoscopic surgery to oncological resections of the neck, thyroid, and parotid gland. Dr. Stern has special interest in advanced sinus surgery.

Dr. Stern met his wife, Jamie, during their first year of college and was married a few years later. They have a daughter born in 2003 and a son born in 2009. When he is not working, teaching, or with his family, Dr. Stern can usually be found playing softball or catching up on major league baseball.


Daniel W. Kozie, M.D.

Dr. Kozie graduated with a B.S. Degree from the University of Wisconsin and received his medical degree from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, IL. He then completed his residency in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Washington in 1976. After serving two years in the US Air Force, Dr. Kozie established a practice in Auburn, WA.

He is board certified in Otolaryngology, is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons and is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Otolaryngology. In the past, Dr. Kozie has served as Chief of Surgery at Auburn Regional Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital.

Currently, Dr. Kozie is limiting his practice to assisting his partners in the operating room.
